Karen Mickle leads a dedicated team of adults from Metropolitan who are passionate about serving needy children through Whiz Kids. Every Tuesday during the school year they meet one-to-one with their young friends who attend Eugene Field Elementary, an inner-city school with many students who need help with reading. By reading with the children week after week, these adult mentors help them improve in all aspects of learning.
Every Tuesday our church provides supper for the kids. After an hour of reading, the children enjoy “club time” where they learn Bible stories and hear the message of God’s love for them in Jesus Christ.
Seasonal parties and an end-of-school picnic help make Whiz Kids an attractive destination for these children. They need the consistent support and Christian influence of caring adults. Most of the children show academic improvement. Whiz Kids helps them build a foundation for success in school. Eugene Field School earned a B+ in the recent State achievement rankings. I suspect Whiz Kids tutors are part of the reason.
We have an urgent need for tutors. Many children are on a waiting list as we do not have enough tutors to meet the need. Also, three of our tutors have had to drop out unexpectedly. We need two women and one man to fill those positions immediately. Call Karen (405-818-1361) or Laura Love (405-740-4694) for more information.
