Mobile Meals Past
(This portion reprinted from May 2013)
Mary Cole took note of the toad-choking rain. She had second thoughts about someone commuting from Midwest City to deliver meals in such miserable weather. “I wouldn’t miss it for anything,” she heard over the phone. Such is the dedication of 35 plus or so volunteers who deliver meals to 22 seniors every Friday without fail. Mobile Meals was established to provide food for the elderly in their homes, thereby delaying, if not altogether avoiding, relocation to a nursing facility. As one volunteer relayed, “To them, it’s paramount that they stay in their homes, …it’s the food and watchful eye that enables the seniors to continue living there.”
The valid need and the blessing of involvement with Mobile Meals in their former church weren’t lost on George and Judy Cannon. When they came to Metropolitan in 2003, George’s knack for organization in plotting delivery routes and Judy’s skills as a cook, united to build a solid framework for the fledgling ministry. After serving almost five years, George and Judy reluctantly stepped away to focus energies on Judy’s battle with cancer.
Mary Cole had 40 years of cooking under her belt, whipping up meals for church camps, schools, hospitals, and even a tea room. Seeking the Lord’s direction after she “retired,” she was amused when He responded, “If you love Me, feed my sheep.” Mary knows the context is spiritual in nature, but she took the hint and dived in.
For 10 1/2 years Mary and her faithful hubby Phil, planned, scoured papers for sales and coupons, shopped, and prepared tasty meals for the lucky seniors on Metropolitan’s two delivery routes. How lucky? Out of 5 churches serving the NW area, Metropolitan is the only church actually cooking a homemade meal. The others are purchasing meals from nursing home cafeterias. The appreciation of the seniors is genuine for the tasty meal delivered in a container lovingly decorated with pictures of flowers, animals, and beautiful scenery. Quite often a driver will hear, “This is the church that does the ‘good’ meals.”
Mobile Meals Present
After a decade plus of service, Mary Cole is reluctantly “ handing off her apron and spatula” to Marvin Rex. She and daughter Patty Elder, will continue making seasonal themed crafts to accompany the meals, and in a bind serve as back-up for Marvin. But her primary focus will be caring for her husband Phillip who suffers several chronic health challenges. Mary smiled, “And I’ll be cooking of course.” Lucky Phil.
In the meanwhile, the work is carried on by Marvin and volunteers who serve as assistant cooks, decorators of the meal containers, and a faithful teams of drivers delivering food in all kinds of weather. Like ancient Persian couriers, it can be said of them, “Neither snow nor rain nor heat stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” (I left out gloom of night, since they deliver at lunch time!) Your faithful service has made Metropolitan’s Mobile Meals program a practical and effective way to communicate Christ’s love.
Mobile Meals Future?
To continue this vital ministry to our community, we have a pressing need for more drivers to deliver meals. Those currently delivering meals can share the blessing they receive for their service. Can you spare one hour a month? If so, perhaps Mobile Meals is the ministry for you? Why not pray and ask the Lord for direction like Mary did. He just might whisper “Feed My sheep” or “Take a meal to My sheep.”
