Wendell and Bernie Mason served the Lord faithfully through Child Evangelism Fellowship for more than fifty years. It was when they moved to Tulsa in 1965 that they were introduced to CEF. Bernie was invited by her friend Wanda to be a helper. She borrowed Wanda’s CEF materials to use in teaching her Sunday School Class. It wasn’t long before she started a Good News Club in their home
Wanda learned that Wendell was interested and experienced in camp work. He was asked by the Northeast Chapter of CEF Oklahoma to start a camp ministry. Wendell and Bernie organized the first CEF Camp in Tahlequah.
In the fall of 1971, CEF Northeast called Wendell to be Director. In the spring of 1972, they attended the CEF Institute located in Warrenton, MO. They served in Tulsa and Northeast Oklahoma. Wendell was Director and both taught training classes. In 1985, Wendell was offered the position of State Director of Oklahoma. Bernie was his Assistant. We are privileged to have worshipped alongside the Masons at MBC since 1985.
They directed the Good News Club and Christian Youth in Action training program, camp, and fair ministry in both Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Many young people were trained to lead 5-Day Clubs in the summers. Wendell and Bernie hosted many of the young people in their home during the summers. Many of these young people serve in special Christian work today. An added blessing was seeing their own children and grandchildren serving with CEF in various ways.
Following a heart attack in 1999, Wendell resigned as State Director and served as Prayer Chairman. Bernie continued as Assistant State Director until September 30, 2018, when she resigned in order to take care of Wendell. Wendell is now with the Lord. The young lives they taught, mentored, and served are too numerous to count. God used them also in training workers to teach, mentor and serve.
CEF of Oklahoma will honor Wendell and Bernie for their many years of ministry with a reception to be held at Metropolitan Baptist Church on Saturday, January 26, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.
